The ketinting boat is included in a jukung type boat – one of the traditional types of nusantara boats. These boats can be found in various regions. From the Banjar community in South Kalimantan, the Madurese and Balinese people, and almost the entire coast of Sumatra knows jukung boats. Although there are in many places, each region has its own peculiarities in terms of form and technique of manufacture – as well as the artificial ketinting of Kiluan <\/a>residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ketinting from Kiluan has a standard size of 11 meters long and 60 centimeters wide. These boats are generally made from intact chunks of tabuh (tabo) which are perforated and shaved to make the hull of the boat. Wood is grown naturally on Kiluan Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the hull section is complete, boat building is continued by making the two pointed ends. On both sides of the boat, there is a katir (outrigger), which is a bamboo frame that keeps the boat balanced against the waves and wind at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aerodynamic shape makes the boat reliable when facing the ferocious sea. Although fishermen use it more for fishing in shallow seas or take tourists to see dolphins not far from the mainland, this boat turned out to be tough enough to take a long trip to the Java Sea and cross to Ujung Kulon. With this small boat, the trip to Ujung Kulon can be taken within 6 to 8 hours drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
