Buya Hamka Birthplace, Important figure in Indonesia

Helloindonesia.id – The trip to Lake Maninjau was incomplete without visiting the home of a great cleric from Minangkabau, Buya Hamka. This historic house is on the edge of the lake, precisely in Muaro Pauh Village, Nagari Sungai Batang, Tanjung Raya District, Agam.

The location, which is now functioned as a museum, is a repository of relics of figures who are also known as writers, journalists, commentators, as well as a politician. Here visitors can absorb the spirit of struggle that was once echoed by the nationalist cleric during his lifetime.

Prof. Dr. Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah or widely known by the name of Buya Hamka was born on Monday, February 17, 1908. The eldest of the seven siblings was born in a strong family holding religious teachings.

The father, Abdul Karim Amrullah, or better known as the Hajj Rasul, is known as a figure of Islamic renewal in the Minangkabau community. This strong Islamic character in his extended family became the initial foundation of Hamka’s personality in his later development as an adult.

Since he was a teenager, Hamka has had a great interest in the world of literature and movement organizations. His passion for reading has developed his insights to the limits of thought of the generation of teenagers his age at that time.

This also made him make up his mind to migrate to Java when he was 16 years old, around 1924. In Yogyakarta and Bandung, he was active in a number of movement organizations including Sarekat Islam and Muhammadiyah and took time to learn from movement figures including HOS Cokroaminoto.

Even though it was only a year, what he gained during his journey abroad had a great influence on his life journey. In the period that followed, Hamka contributed a lot in the propaganda and movement through the contribution of his writings, some of which ended in prohibition because they were considered harmful to the Dutch East Indies government.

After the independence era until the end of his life, Hamka continued to actively write in various media, both bulletins, magazines, books, romance, to the interpretation of the Koran. Of the approximately 118 titles he has written in his lifetime, about 28 titles can be seen among the collection of books in the Buya Hamka Birth House Museum.

In addition to Hamka’s works, in this museum visitors can also see various relics and documentation of Hamka’s life journey. Among the important collections of this museum are paintings and photographs of Hamka from his youth to adulthood and a number of awards he had received during his lifetime.

There is also a photograph depicting a sea of ​​people who helped deliver his body to the final resting place on July 24, 1981. In addition, there are also collections such as the robe of honor and toga that Hamka used when receiving an Honoris Causa Doctoral degree at Al-Azhar Cairo and the Malaysian National University of Malaysia .

To reach this area, from Bukittinggi visitors must pass through the Kelok 44 area (Kelok Ampek Puluh Ampek). After passing through the area, we will meet an intersection, where the direction to the left is towards the museum while to the right is to Lubuk Basung, the capital of Agam Regency.

The distance from the intersection to the museum is approximately 7 kilometers through a winding path. Along the way, we can enjoy the beauty of Lake Maninjau right on our right.
