Happy 80th Independence Day, Indonesia: Freedom Is More Than a Slogan

Today, August 17, 2025, Indonesia celebrates its 80th Independence Day. Eight decades since the Proclamation of Independence were declared, this milestone reflects maturity but also reminds us that our journey as a nation is far from over.

Celebrating the Nation’s Richness

From Sabang to Merauke, Indonesia is blessed with vast oceans, majestic mountains, fertile lands, and diverse cultures. These treasures should make us a confident and strong nation. Yet reality often disappoints, as the people witness the misuse of this potential by leaders and officials.

A Criticism to the Leaders

Independence is not just about waving flags or holding traditional competitions. True freedom means being free from corruption, free from injustice, and free from inequality. Sadly, we still see lawmakers sleeping in parliament, officials chasing personal interests, and leaders breaking their promises. This is the failure that frustrates the people.

Hopes for the Future

At 80 years old, Indonesia should be wiser and stronger. Our hopes are simple: honest leaders, true representatives of the people, and policies that prioritize public welfare. We believe hope lies in the young generation who dare to demand justice, and in the spirit of unity that never fades.

Let us treat independence as a shared duty, not just a historical legacy.

Happy 80th Independence Day, Indonesia! May this nation stand tall with prosperous people and honorable leaders.
