Every July 12th, Indonesia commemorates Indonesian Cooperative Day, honoring the long journey of cooperatives as a pillar of the people’s economy. In 2025, this national day reaches its 78th anniversary, carrying the theme “Advanced Cooperatives for a Fair and Prosperous Indonesia.”
The celebration traces back to the First National Cooperative Congress in Tasikmalaya on July 12th, 1947. This congress led to the formation of Sentral Organisasi Koperasi Rakyat Indonesia (SOKRI), the predecessor of the Indonesian Cooperative Council (DEKOPIN).
Even earlier, in 1896, Raden Aria Wiria Atmadja established a mutual savings and loan institution in Purwokerto to help civil servants escape loan sharks—a pioneer move in Indonesia’s cooperative history.
The 2025 theme, “Advanced Cooperatives for a Fair and Prosperous Indonesia,” emphasizes the importance of cooperatives as the foundation of an inclusive, independent, and equitable economy. It also highlights the need for cooperatives to innovate in the digital era.
Activities include cooperative expos, national seminars, talk shows, social services, and pilgrimages to Bung Hatta’s grave, known as the Father of Indonesian Cooperatives.
More than economic institutions, cooperatives symbolize unity. The principle by the members, for the members reflects Indonesia’s spirit of mutual cooperation (gotong royong).
In today’s era, cooperatives are encouraged to embrace digital transformation to stay relevant and benefit more communities.
