Every year on June 8, Indonesia commemorates the birthday of President Soeharto, one of the nation’s most influential leaders. President Soeharto’s Birthday Born on June 8, 1921, in Kemusuk, Yogyakarta, Soeharto served as the second President of the Republic of Indonesia. His rule, lasting over three decades, marked a significant chapter in the nation’s political and economic development an era known as the New Order.
Soeharto began his military career during the Japanese occupation. After Indonesia gained independence, he quickly rose through the ranks and became the commander of the Army’s Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad). He played a key role during the political turmoil of 1965, taking over national security and eventually replacing President Soekarno.
Soeharto officially became President in 1967 and held the position until 1998. His leadership was known for economic reforms, including inflation control, infrastructure development, and achieving rice self-sufficiency through the Green Revolution. Under his Five-Year Development Plan (Repelita), Indonesia experienced strong economic growth and political stability, though it came at the cost of restricted freedom of speech and political dissent.
While often referred to as the Father of Development, Soeharto’s era was also criticized for corruption, collusion, and nepotism (KKN). His resignation in 1998 marked the beginning of the Reform Era, opening the way for democratization in Indonesia.
Observing President Soeharto’s birthday is an opportunity to reflect on Indonesia’s past. It’s a moment to study both the achievements and the challenges of his leadership, and to draw valuable lessons for Indonesia’s future.
