Every year on May 18, Indonesia commemorates National Archives Day, a moment to recognize the vital role of archives in preserving national memory and supporting transparent, accountable governance.
This day is based on the enactment of Law Number 7 of 1971 concerning the Basic Provisions of Archiving. As society and technology advanced, this regulation was updated through Law Number 43 of 2009 to meet modern information needs and adapt to the digital era.
In 2025, the National Archives Day adopts the theme:
“Prakarsa Mahardika: A Digital Archival Ecosystem for Effective Governance, Scientific Advancement, and National Culture.”
The phrase Prakarsa Mahardika reflects an initiative for independent, progressive action in building a future-oriented, digital-based archival system.
This year’s theme highlights how digital archives can:
In the digital age, archives are more than physical documents. They are an essential part of national information infrastructure. Through digitalization, archives become more accessible, efficient, and sustainable, benefiting government institutions, researchers, and the public alike.
National Archives Day is a reminder that well-managed archives contribute to good governance, academic growth, and cultural preservation. As we move forward, let us support Indonesia’s archival transformation for a stronger, more informed nation.
