[:en]Indonesian National Farmers Day[:]
Every year on September 24, Indonesia celebrates National Farmers Day. This commemoration is rooted in a historic moment in 1960 when the government enacted the Basic Agrarian Law (UUPA). The regulation became the foundation for land ownership reform, fair agrarian distribution, and the protection of farmers’ rights across the archipelago.
At that time, land inequality was a major issue in Indonesia. Many farmers did not own land and worked only as laborers on landlords’ properties. The Basic Agrarian Law was introduced to create justice by adopting the principle of “land for the people.” Therefore, September 24 is celebrated as National Farmers Day and symbolizes agrarian reform.
This day is more than a ceremonial commemoration. It reminds us that farmers are the backbone of the nation. Without them, food supply would not be secured. It is also a moment to encourage the government and society to support farmers with policies, technology, and better market access.
In the face of modernization, climate change, and land conversion, farmers’ roles are increasingly vital. They safeguard national food security and help Indonesia remain self-sufficient. Supporting farmers means protecting the nation’s future.
National Farmers Day is a time to honor the dedication of Indonesian farmers and continue the ideals of agrarian reform. Let us support their welfare so that Indonesia remains food sovereign.
