The uniqueness of Maluku traditional clothing

Helloindonesia.id – Discussing Indonesia’s cultural richness is truly endless. From traditional ceremonies, cuisine, and customs to traditional clothing, Indonesia is home to an incredible cultural heritage. Even within a single tribe, the depth of culture can be complex and fascinating—let alone when considering the thousands of ethnic groups that exist across the archipelago. One of the most visually distinctive cultural elements is traditional clothing.

Maluku Traditional Dress

Traditional attire from Maluku is particularly intriguing. In fact, Maluku doesn’t have just one type of traditional clothing. Each region within the province has its own variations and unique characteristics. However, this article focuses on a more general style that is widely recognized across Maluku: the Cele Shirt or Salele Cloth.

At first glance, Maluku’s traditional dress may seem simple compared to the intricate designs of Balinese or Javanese clothing. Yet, it remains elegant and stylish in its own way. The Cele Shirt is known for its checkered pattern, featuring small box-like motifs. The fabric used is typically thick, yet still comfortable for daily wear.

Cele Shirt: A Symbol of Elegance

For women, the Cele Shirt is often paired with a sarong of matching color or combined with a kebaya, a classic blouse that reflects Indonesian femininity. Meanwhile, men wear the Cele Shirt like a casual suit jacket, paired with a shirt underneath and formal trousers—usually black or coordinated in color. The Cele Shirt is typically bright red, adorned with gold or silver thread patterns. For footwear, both men and women commonly wear black Vantovel shoes to complete the look.

Women’s Accessories and Traditions

Women’s traditional outfits are often complemented by several key accessories. One important element is the conde, a hair bun style similar to that of Java, but with unique accessories. These include Haspels, decorative pieces made of or resembling gold and silver, shaped like flowers and worn around the ears. A comb is usually placed at the center of the bun, and a Ron’s flower—typically made from cork—is looped around the hair as decoration.

Another striking accessory is the Lenso fabric. This piece resembles a handkerchief and is worn over the shoulder, usually secured with a pin. The tradition of wearing the Lenso is believed to be influenced by Dutch culture, where women often carried handkerchiefs as part of their attire.

A Blend of Cultures and Ceremonial Importance

Maluku traditional clothing shows noticeable European influences, yet it continues to reflect the region’s cultural identity and heritage. These garments are typically worn during cultural ceremonies such as Panas Pela, Soil Cleansing Rituals, or village royal inaugurations. However, they are also worn during family events like weddings or even during church services.

Despite external influences, traditional clothing from Maluku retains its cultural significance and continues to be a symbol of pride for its people
