Komodo, The Oldest Indonesian Ancient Animals

Komodo dragons are animals that are quite large and quite dangerous for humans. Komodo (varanus komodoensis) is an ancient traces of the world. Its history leads to the fauna and nature of the Jurassic era, about 210-140 million years ago. With these characteristics, the animals included in the world’s largest lizard species are subject to research from various fields of science, including in the fields of paleoanthropology, biology, geology, and anthropology.

Indonesian Komodo lives on several islands, namely Komodo Island, Rinca Island, Gili Motang Island, Flores Island, Gili Dasami Island. This population and ecosystem are recognized as “world heritage” by UNESCO.

These large monitor lizards are very vulnerable to extinction. Natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcano eruptions, fires, damage to native habitats, poaching, reduced food, and increased tourism are the causes of Komodo dragon’s vulnerability to extinction.

Therefore, large monitor lizards, which are native to Komodo Island, are called ora protected by Indonesian government regulations. To protect their habitat, Komodo National Park was established.
