[:id]Legenda Nyi Roro Kidul[:]
The legend of Nyi Roro Kidul is one of the most well-known folk tales in Indonesia. This mystical story tells of the powerful Queen of the Southern Sea, believed to possess supernatural abilities to protect coastal communities and preserve nature.
Because of her influence, many Javanese people, especially fishermen and those who depend on the sea for their livelihood, perform rituals to honor her. These rituals are believed to bring protection from natural disasters along the southern coast of Java, stretching from Serang, Banten, to Banyuwangi, East Java.
Over time, the legend of Nyi Roro Kidul has been adapted into various versions, becoming an integral part of Indonesian culture and tradition. Her story has been featured in films, books, and even modern games, such as Kadita in Mobile Legends and Roro Kidul in Atlantica Online. However, the most frequently told version traces its origins to the 15th century during the reign of the Pakuan Pajajaran Kingdom.
But where did this revered (and sometimes feared) mythical figure come from?
Long ago, in the land of Java, there ruled a wise and courageous king named Prabu Siliwangi VI. He was known for his love of adventure and often hunted alone in the deep forests.
One day, while hunting, the king unknowingly wandered too far and got lost. As night fell, he struggled to find his way back and eventually decided to rest. Suddenly, a beautiful woman appeared before him. Seeing her as his only hope for guidance, he asked for her help to return to his kingdom.
The woman agreed, but on one condition: the king must stay with her for a while. Thinking it was a small price to pay, Prabu Siliwangi agreed.
She led him to her home, which was unexpectedly grand, like a palace. However, when he asked about her origins, she refused to answer.
Over time, the king grew fond of her. Eventually, they fell in love and got married, living happily together for a time. However, as months passed, the king remembered his duties. Feeling guilty for leaving his people for so long, he decided to return.
His wife allowed him to go and even sent her guards to escort him back to Pakuan Pajajaran.
Back in his kingdom, Prabu Siliwangi was welcomed with joy. His people had feared he was lost forever. As time passed, he became deeply involved in his duties and eventually forgot about his mysterious wife.
One night, he was awakened by the sound of a baby crying. When he followed the sound, he discovered a baby girl. As he held the child, a thick mist appeared, and his wife emerged from the shadows.
She revealed that the baby, named Princess Kadita, was their daughter. She asked the king to raise her as a human and give her a good life.
Before the king could ask more, she vanished. Prabu Siliwangi, keeping his promise, raised Princess Kadita with great love. As she grew up, her beauty reminded him of her mother.
Years later, realizing he had no male heir, Prabu Siliwangi decided to remarry. He took a noblewoman named Dewi Mutiara as his new queen, hoping to have a son to inherit the throne. His wish was granted when Dewi Mutiara bore him a son.
At first, the family lived in harmony. But over time, Dewi Mutiara became jealous of the king’s love for Princess Kadita. She feared that the princess would stand in the way of her son’s ascension to the throne.
Determined to get rid of Kadita, she sought the help of a shaman. One night, the princess mysteriously developed a painful skin disease. Her body was covered in boils, and no healer could cure her.
Seizing the moment, Dewi Mutiara convinced the king that Kadita’s illness was dangerous and could spread across the kingdom. With a heavy heart, Prabu Siliwangi agreed to send his beloved daughter away.
Heartbroken, Princess Kadita wandered through the wilderness. After days of aimless travel, she arrived at Mount Kombang, where she decided to meditate.
During her meditation, she heard a mysterious voice, claiming to be her mother. The voice told her to travel south, where she would find healing. Though hesitant, she followed the guidance.
After a long journey, she reached the shores of the Southern Sea. There, she heard her mother’s voice once again, instructing her to dive into the ocean.
Though afraid, she desperately wished to be free from her suffering. She took a deep breath and plunged into the sea. Miraculously, as the waves engulfed her, her disease vanished, and she was granted immense supernatural power.
With her newfound abilities, she built a magnificent underwater kingdom. Many warriors sought her hand in marriage, but she challenged them to battle in the stormy sea. None could defeat her, and those who lost became her loyal followers.
Over time, she became known as Kanjeng Ratu Nyi Roro Kidul, the Queen of the Southern Sea, revered for her strength and kindness. She protected the people along the coast, ensuring their safety and prosperity.
The legend of Nyi Roro Kidul teaches the importance of resilience, kindness, and justice. Despite facing betrayal and hardship, Kadita remained strong and never sought revenge. Instead, she embraced her destiny and used her power to help others.
Her story reminds us that even in the darkest times, perseverance and goodness will always prevail.
