Every April 24, Indonesia observes National Transportation Day. This commemoration traces back to the founding of the country’s first public transport agency, DAMRI (Djawatan Angkoetan Motor Repoeblik Indonesia), in 1943 during the Japanese occupation.
Originally formed to support military transportation, DAMRI evolved into a critical component of Indonesia’s public transport network. Over time, it played a key role in connecting cities and regions across the archipelago, becoming a symbol of national progress in mobility.
National Transportation Day is not just about remembering the past — it is a call to action. Public transportation plays a vital role in reducing traffic congestion, cutting air pollution, and providing affordable mobility for people from all walks of life.
