On April 24, Indonesia and many nations remember Asia-Africa Solidarity Day, a celebration of unity and cooperation between two continents. The date marks the legendary Bandung Conference of 1955, where 29 newly independent or decolonizing nations gathered.
They came together to oppose colonialism and imperialism and to affirm the rights of nations to self-determination and peaceful coexistence. The conference was a milestone in the emergence of the Global South as a force for international justice.
In 2015, during the 60th anniversary of the conference, Bandung was officially declared the Capital of Asia-Africa Solidarity. This recognition reaffirms Indonesia’s pivotal role in fostering global collaboration and justice.
Today, the legacy of the conference lives on at Gedung Merdeka, a museum and educational center where visitors can learn about the spirit of the Bandung Conference and the fight for decolonization.
Asia-Africa Solidarity Day is not only a remembrance of the past but a reminder to uphold the values of peace, equality, and mutual respect. In today’s interconnected world, these principles are vital for building sustainable and inclusive global partnerships.
As the world faces challenges such as climate change, global inequality, and economic instability, the unity forged in Bandung can inspire nations to work together toward shared prosperity and peace.
Let us honor this day by strengthening the bonds between continents and continuing the spirit of solidarity that once shook the world.
