Ternate is a historic city in North Maluku, Indonesia. It was once known as Gapi and became a major trade and administrative center under the Ternate Sultanate in the 13th century. The name “Ternate” comes from the term “tarinata,” meaning strong and resilient. This reflects the character of its people, shaped by the presence of Mount Gamalama.
Ternate is an island city with breathtaking landscapes. It has an active volcano, stunning beaches, and fertile land. Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch influences shaped its European-style urban design. The city center features a public square, markets, courts, and the Sultan’s palace.
Ternate spans about 542,736 square kilometers and includes eight main islands. These include Ternate Island, Hiri Island, and Moti Island. The region has long been famous for its rich spice resources, making it a major trading hub. However, Mount Gamalama remains an active volcano, posing challenges for its residents.
Ternate’s people were once known for their strong-willed nature. Today, they are friendly and welcoming to newcomers. Due to rapid population growth, the government moved North Maluku’s capital to Sofifi. However, Ternate remains the region’s economic center.
Ternate offers many historical and natural attractions. Visitors can explore colonial-era forts such as Tolukko, Kastela, and Oranye. Tolire Lake and Sulamadaha Beach showcase the island’s natural beauty. Another unique site is Batu Angus, a volcanic rock formation created by past eruptions of Mount Gamalama.
Ternate is a true gem of North Maluku. It is rich in history, culture, and natural wonders. The island is small enough to explore in about an hour. However, its beauty and charm take much longer to fully appreciate. Preserving Ternate’s heritage is essential to ensure future generations can enjoy its treasures.
