Indonesia is home to hundreds of rich cultural traditions. Among them is the Merariq traditional ceremony Lombok, a unique marriage ritual of the Sasak people in West Nusa Tenggara. This custom reflects deeply rooted values that emphasize harmony, family approval, and local wisdom.
Lombok is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, located between Bali and Sumbawa. It is separated by the Lombok Strait to the west and Alas Strait to the east. The island spans around 5,435 square kilometers, with Mataram City as its administrative center. The Sasak ethnic group, native to this island, has preserved unique traditions, including the Merariq ceremony.
In the Merariq traditional ceremony Lombok, marriage begins with a symbolic elopement. The groom “abducts” the bride—after getting prior agreement from both families. This symbolic act of “running away” is followed by the formal wedding ritual the next day, known as ijab kabul.
The term Merariq comes from two Sasak words: me (let’s) and berari (run). Together, it means “let’s run”—a poetic metaphor for a couple beginning a new life together.
It is important not to confuse Merariq with memaling, which means stealing or abducting someone without consent. The Merariq traditional ceremony Lombok follows strict cultural rules known as awiq-awiq, ensuring that the act remains honorable and respected within the community.
Beyond its unique form, Merariq traditional ceremony Lombok holds philosophical depth. It reflects not only love between two people, but also the importance of consent, community approval, and cultural continuity. It’s not just a ritual—it’s a symbol of unity and commitment.
