Sekaten Yogyakarta: A Unique Celebration of the Prophet’s Birthday

Every year during Rabiul Awal, Yogyakarta hosts Sekaten, a traditional celebration that dates back to the Demak Sultanate. This event commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Maulid Nabi) and has become one of the most iconic cultural attractions in the city.

History and Meaning of Sekaten

Sekaten was first introduced by the Wali Songo as a way to spread Islam. By playing gamelan music, people were drawn together to listen to Islamic teachings. The tradition has been preserved by the Yogyakarta Sultanate for centuries. The word Sekaten is believed to come from syahadatain, the Islamic declaration of faith.

The Sacred Gamelan

The highlight of the celebration is the performance of Sekaten gamelan. Two sacred sets of gamelan, Kyai Gunturmadu and Kyai Nogowilogo, are played in the courtyard of Masjid Gedhe Kauman for a week. Their unique sound attracts thousands of visitors.

Grebeg Maulud

The climax of Sekaten is Grebeg Maulud, a grand procession featuring gunungan—mountains of food, crops, and traditional snacks. After prayers, the gunungan is distributed to the crowd as a symbol of blessing and prosperity.

Night Market Festivities

Beyond its spiritual aspect, Sekaten is also enlivened by a vibrant night market. Visitors can enjoy rides, culinary delights, and traditional performances. This makes Sekaten not only a religious event but also a cultural festival that strengthens social ties.
