Trikora Day – History and Meaning

Trikora Day is commemorated every December 19 to honor the declaration of Tri Komando Rakyat, delivered by President Soekarno in 1961. The declaration marked Indonesia’s firm stance against Dutch efforts to establish a separate state in West Irian.

Trikora became a national call to action, combining political resolve and military preparedness to ensure that West Irian remained an integral part of Indonesia.

Objectives of the Tri Komando Rakyat

The Tri Komando Rakyat consisted of three main objectives: to thwart the creation of a Dutch-backed Papuan state, to raise the Indonesian flag across West Irian, and to mobilize national forces to defend independence and unity.

These objectives reflected Indonesia’s commitment to sovereignty and national integration.

The Legacy of Trikora Day

The Trikora movement eventually led to the New York Agreement of 1962, paving the way for the transfer of West Irian to Indonesia. Today, This Day serves as a reminder of Indonesia’s struggle for territorial integrity and national dignity.

For modern generations, Trikora Day emphasizes unity, patriotism, and the importance of safeguarding national sovereignty through peaceful diplomacy and collective strength.
