Bulungan: The Almost Forgotten Sultanate in North Kalimantan

One of the remaining traces of the Sultanate of Bulungan that can still be seen today is the Bulungan Sultanate Museum located in Tanjung Palas, North Kalimantan. When Bulungan joined the Republic of Indonesia through the Malinau Convention on August 7, 1949, Bulungan was actually designated as a special region. The Sultanate of Bulungan at that time was one of the major sultanates (formerly kingdoms) whose territory covered the coastal areas of Bulungan Regency, Malinau Regency, Nunukan Regency, Tana Tidung Regency, and Tarakan City.

There is an interesting story about the Sultanate of Bulungan which is part of the history of this nation’s journey. During President Soekarno’s reign, the tensions that occurred between Indonesia and Malaysia affected the BUlungan Sultanate. Quoted from various sources, at that time the Sultanate of Bulungan was considered to have defected and sided with Malaysia. As a result, in 1964, the Bulungan Sultanate was destroyed by burning by the Indonesian Republic Army, which at that time was under the orders of Brigadier General Suharyo. Apart from the palace of the Sultanate of Bulungan being destroyed, many members of the empire were also executed. This incident is certainly an unpleasant record for the history of the Indonesian nation.

The Bulungan Sultanate Museum was built by the government at the location where the Bulungan Sultanate Palace used to be. This Museu still keeps some of the relics from the previous Bulungan Sultanate that can still be saved. In this museum there is also a replica of the Sultanate of Bulungan when it was still standing. In the front yard of the museum there is also a cannon as a relic of the previous Sultanate of the Month. As Indonesian people who care about the history of their own nation, it never hurts to visit this museum while reminiscing and adding insight into the Sultanate of Bulungan. After all, this sultanate has become an important part of the history of the Indonesian nation, which was once well known for its ranks of kingdoms and sultanates that stood from the west to the east of the territory of this country.
