Ketopong, Crown of Sultan Kutai Kartanegara

Helloindonesia.id – This crown was worn by Sultan Aji Muhamad Sulaiman in 1845-1899. Made of gold and gemstones, this is the helmet or crown worn by the Sultan of Kutai Kartanegara.

This ketopong is in the form of a top-notch crown and the face is in the form of a multilevel meru This helmet is also decorated with a spiral motif combined with a vine motif. The back decoration on the helmet is in the form of a mungkur garuda decorated with flowers, deer and birds.

Author and explorer, Carl Bock, in his book The Head Hunters Of Borneo writes that Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman had 6 to 8 gold carvers who were specially employed to make gold and silver engraved items for the Sultan.

The original ketopong, which weighs almost 2 kilograms, is currently stored in the Jakarta National Museum. Meanwhile, at the Mulawarman Museum, Tenggarong, East Kalimantan, a duplication of the original helmet is kept.
