Helloindonesia.id – The Saibatin tribe inhabit the coastal area of Lampung which stretches from east, south, to west. Saibatin tribal distribution areas include East Lampung, South Lampung, Bandar Lampung, Pesawaran, Tanggamus, and West Lampung.
Like the Pepadun, the Saibatin or Peminggir follow a patrilineal kinship system or follow the father’s lineage. Even so, the Saibatin tribe has a specificity in terms of community order and tradition.
The historical significance of Saibatin
“Saibatin” means one mind or one lord. This is in accordance with the social order in the Saibatin Tribe, there is only one customary king in each generation of leadership. The culture of the Saibatin tribe tends to be aristocratic because customary positions can only be inherited through lineage. Unlike the Pepadun, there are no specific ceremonies that can change one’s social status in society.
Another characteristic of the Saibatin tribe can be seen from the devices used in traditional rituals. One of them is the form of a siger (sigekh) or bridal crown of the Saibatin Tribe which has seven curves (sigokh curves). The seven shoots symbolize the seven adoqs, namely suttan, the king of jukuan / depati, inner, radin, mineral, kimas, and mas. In addition, there is also a so-called sparkling cloud (gemisikh cloud) which is thought to be used as part of a traditional procession, including in the marriage procession.
