Helloindonesia.id – Every September 28 is celebrated as National Railway Day. In 2020, the establishment of the Republic of Indonesia Railway Agency (DKARI) is commemorated, which is the forerunner to the commemoration of National Railway Day.

Reporting from the kai.id website, after Indonesia proclaimed Independence on August 17, 1945, a few days later the train station and Head Office in Bandung were taken over on September 28, 1945. This marked the establishment of DKARI. When the Dutch returned to Indonesia in 1946, the Dutch re-established a railway in Indonesia called Staatsporwegen/Verenigde Spoorwegbedrif (SS/VS).

Based on the peace agreement of the December Round Table Conference (KMB) 1949, the takeover of assets belonging to the Dutch East Indies Government was carried out. The transfer was in the form of a merger between DKARI and SS/VS to become Djawatan Kereta Api (DKA) in 1950.

Judging from its history, the rail transportation model has an important role in supporting economic growth, regional development and unifying the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia in the context of realizing the Archipelago Insight, as well as strengthening national resilience in an effort to achieve national goals based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia. 1945.

Railways as one of the modes of transportation in the national transportation system have the characteristics of mass transportation and their own advantages, which cannot be separated from other modes of transportation. to improve people’s welfare.

Railways have special characteristics and advantages, especially in their ability to transport both people and goods in bulk, save energy, save space use, have a high safety factor, have a low level of pollution, and are more efficient than road transportation modes for long-distance transportation. far and for areas with heavy traffic, such as urban transportation.

Along with the development of science and technology, the operation of the railway has shown adaptation, development, and an important role in supporting and encouraging economic activity, strengthening defense and security, facilitating government activities, strengthening national unity and integrity, and improving relations between nations.
