Tapis Fabric, Lampung Traditional Textile Craft Heritage

Helloindonesia.id – Lampung traditional dress is synonymous with sparkling colors, especially the color of gold. This can be seen from a variety of accessories, including siger, canoe bracelets, bukhung bracelets, and ladders that greatly emphasize the touch of gold color. In addition to accessories, a touch of gold can also be found in Lampung traditional textile products. One of them is filter cloth, which is now the province’s flagship textile product.

Motifs and basic ingredients of Tapis fabric

Tapis fabric is a traditional Lampung product with a special motif pattern from gold or silver threads. The basic material of this fabric is traditional cotton yarn. Gold or silver thread decoration motifs are made with traditional embroidery techniques (cucuk in local languages) or (modern) embroidery techniques. This cloth is usually used by women as a lower body covering, from the waist to the ankles.

The motifs applied in the filter cloth generally raise the theme of nature, especially flora and fauna. There are also certain fabrics that elevate domestic life such as the andak tapak cloth. In addition, there are different motives that are influenced by the origin of the region, such as pepadun filter, marginal filter, liwa filter, and Abung filter. The motifs on the marginal (coastal) filter are dominant in raising flora while the pepadun (inland) filter motif tends to be simple and rigid.

The process of making traditional filter cloth is somewhat complicated and must be done manually, so the process can take weeks. This makes the filter cloth have a relatively expensive price.

Tapis Fabric Price Range

The price range of traditional filter cloth is very varied, depending on the complexity of the motif, the proportion of the use of gold thread, and the age of the fabric. New production of woven tapis is generally in the millions of rupiah. If you are tens of years old, a filter cloth can be hundreds of millions of rupiah and become a collection item.

Along with the times, variants of filter cloth are made using embroidery techniques. This embroidery filter can be mass produced with a shorter processing time.

Embroidery techniques are also subdivided into manual embroidery techniques and computer embroidery. In terms of price, manual embroidery screens are valued higher than modern embroidery screens. This is related to the level of complexity of the process.
