Mount Kelimutu has an altitude of 1,639 meters above sea level. The location is in Pemo Village, Kelimutu District, Ende Regency, Flores, NTT. This mountain has a different beauty from other mountains in Indonesia. Because, on the mountain there are three lakes formed by the eruption of the Kelimutu volcano.

Uniquely, the three lakes have different shapes, hydrothermal conditions, and geochemistry so that the color of the water is different. These colors also change over time. That is why the crater lake on Mount Kelimutu is known as the Three Colors Lake.

Each of these lakes was named Tiwi Ata Mbupu Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, and Tiwu Ata Polo. Lake Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake Pemuda dan Gadis) is the deepest and most extensive of the three. The lake which has a distinctive green color has a depth of up to 127 meters and an area of 5.5 hectares.

While Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Orang Tua Lake) has a depth of up to 67 meters with an area of 4.5 hectares.

The Tiwu Ata Polo (Enchanting Lake) has a depth of up to 64 meters and an area of 4 hectares. This lake is smaller than the other two lakes. However, it is Tiwu Ata Polo that changes color most often.

Data from the Kelimutu National Park Hall show, during 1915-2011, Ata Polo experienced 44 color changes, Nua Muri Koo Fai changed color 25 times, and Ata Mbupu had 16 color births. There are no definite schedules and change patterns.

Changes sometimes produce mixed colors. Data from the Ministry of Environment shows, in May 1997, Ata Polo water changed color from brown and dark green to red heart. Mbupu changed from dark brown to brownish green.

Whereas Nua Muri Koo Fai turned into salted egg white from blue and light green. It also happened, the color of the lake was almost uniform, everything was green. A year later, the color turns green and black.

According to scientists, the third color change of the lake on Mount Kelimutu was caused by a change in volcanic gas. These changes can also be caused by iron in the fluid that produces red and dark brown.

While green is caused by natural marine biota, such as mosses, which are inside the lake. Erosion of lake walls can also cause discoloration of Kelimutu Lake.

The three crater lakes of Mount Kelimutu have a very charming beauty to famous to foreign countries. Even though getting to the location requires extra energy, this place is always crowded with visitors, both local and foreign tourists.
