Rencong, Aceh’s Traditional Weapon
Helloindonesia.id – Rencong was so popular with the people of Aceh that Aceh came to be known as “Tanah Rencong”. Rencong (Reuncong) is a traditional weapon from Aceh that was used to deal with invaders, until then this weapon became a symbol of courage and heroism of the people of Aceh.
Now, rencong is still used as a fashion attribute in traditional Aceh ceremonies. And rencong can be found in almost all Acehnese handicraft shops as souvenirs.
This weapon has a value regarding Islamic religion. This can be seen from the form of rencong which represents the bismillah sentence form. Its curved handle then thickened at the elbow is the Ba Arabic script; the butt of the gripping place is the Sin script; the taper shape which decreases at the base of the iron near the handle is the Mim script; the iron strip from the base of the handle to the end is the Lam script; the tapered tip with the flat top and the bottom slightly bent upwards is the character Ha.

There are several types of rencong. First, the pudoi rencong, which is a rudimentary rencong in the shape of the handle. Second, rencong meukure, which is decorated with rencong like pictures of animals, wood roots, and flowers in the blade. Third, rencong meupucok, which is a rencong on top of the handle, there is a shoot which is usually made of gold. Fourth, the rucong meucugek, which is a rencong which has a cugek on the handle (adhesive and 90 degree curved handle).
In accordance with the manufacturing material, rencong has levels. For the king or sultan, the scabbard is usually made of ivory and the blade of gold and has a carving in the form of Qur’anic verse quotations. Meanwhile, other rencong are usually made of buffalo horn or wood as a scabbard, and brass or white iron as a dagger.

At present, for the Greater Aceh region, rencong forging sites are located in Bait (Sibreh) and Lamblang (Darul Imarah) villages.
Size is one of the factors that determine the price of rencong. Rencong with a length of 10-12 cm are usually valued at Rp. 20,000 to Rp. 75,000, while rencong whose length is more than 12 cm are valued at Rp. 75,000 to Rp. 80,000. But for special collection rencong, there are those whose prices reach hundreds of thousands of rupiah or even millions of rupiah.
